Quality Measures

Quality Outcomes for Cardiac Surgery

The UMass Memorial Cardiac Surgery Program is a national leader in quality and safety based on recent state and national benchmarks. Our recognitions include:

  • Top 3.2 percent of 968 hospitals nationwide performing aortic valve replacement surgeries for the past three years. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) released its first quality report on aortic valve replacement surgery in May 2012. UMass Memorial earned 3-stars – the highest quality designation – for the past three years for aortic valve replacement surgery.
  • Lowest infection rates in Massachusetts for coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2011, as measured against 13 other Massachusetts hospitals that do the same procedures, according to data from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health 2012 report.
  • Top 14 percent of hospitals performing CABG surgeries for the past six years. STS has rated UMass Memorial one of 968 hospitals in the United States 3-stars – the highest quality designation.
  • Our 30 day risk-adjusted mortality rates are consistently better than the rates reported by STS in the United States for major cardiac surgery procedures.
  • Received the 2009 Massachusetts Department of Public Health Betsy Lehman Patient Safety Recognition Award for building a culture of safety, reducing health care associated infections and enhancing data monitoring resulting in implementation of evidence-based best practices.

Patients needing cardiac surgery can be assured that all of our procedures and protocols reflect the most advanced surgical and medical practices.

Surgery will be performed in our state-of-the-art operating rooms, and postsurgical care in our intensive care unit features the only eICU program in Massachusetts, bringing an extra level of support from a physician led team to enhance patient care. We are committed to provide the highest quality of care and services to patients and their families.
