The Blood and Marrow Transplant program at UMass Memorial Medical Center, located in Worcester, MA, is the most comprehensive center for blood and marrow transplant services in Central New England, offering:

  • Unrelated bone marrow transplants (from someone who is not a relative) 
  • Allogeneic transplants (from someone else) 
  • Autologous bone marrow transplants (from one’s own blood or bone marrow) 
  • Stem cell transplants 
  • Cord blood transplants 
You can feel confident in knowing that our program is fully accredited. It’s also one of only five in New England to do bone marrow transplants from donors who are not related to each other. Since the program began in 1994, hundreds of transplants have been done.

A bone marrow or cord blood transplant (also known as BMT) can be used to treat patients with life-threatening blood, immune system or genetic disorders. A transplant replaces unhealthy blood-forming cells with healthy ones.
Diseases that may be treated include:

  • Leukemias 
  • Lymphomas 
  • Multiple myeloma and other plasma cell disorders 
  • Severe aplastic anemia and sickle cell disease
