WORCESTER - Jennifer Daley, MD, a nationally recognized physician executive with expertise in patient safety, quality, service excellence and clinical operational improvement, joined UMass Memorial Medical Center as executive vice president and chief operating officer. She will also be joining the faculty of the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Daley joins UMass Memorial Medical Center from Partners Community Healthcare, Inc., where she served as the chief medical officer and supported system-wide performance improvement for Partners HealthCare system.

"Dr. Daley brings tremendous leadership abilities and a deep understanding of operational improvement, quality, and safety issues in today's clinical environment," said Walter Ettinger, MD, MBA, president of UMass Memorial Medical Center. "Her expertise in these areas is renowned in the medical community and we welcome her to the UMass Memorial team."

"Dr. Daley will be a valuable addition to the leadership team of the academic health sciences center," said Terence Flotte, MD, executive deputy chancellor, provost and dean of the School of Medicine. "Her experience as a physician-executive will be instrumental in the management of important collaborations between the academic and clinical partners."

A native of Longmeadow, Massachusetts, Daley received her undergraduate degree from Brown University in 1972 and her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1976. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Tufts Medical Center in 1979 and practiced there for eight years. While at Tufts, she became interested in quality systems improvement.

Prior to her work at Partners, Daley was senior vice president and chief medical officer at Tenet Healthcare Corporation, where she drove a system-wide transformation of Tenet's quality and safety program while supporting operational improvements. Before joining Tenet, Daley worked in various senior quality leadership roles at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Massachusetts General Hospital.

She became nationally recognized as an innovative, quality-driven physician executive when she created the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which she joined in 1990 as co-chair and director of research.

Daley, who was named one of the top 25 women executives in health care by Modern Healthcare in 2007, has a strong understanding of effective methods of collaboration with both academic and community-based physicians as a result of her clinical, quality and operations expertise. She has also taught internal medicine and conducted research, giving her an appreciation for the different and important roles played within an academic medical center.
